Tim Ho Wan: Dining at the World’s Cheapest Michelin Starred Restaurant
One of our favorite things about traveling is trying local food. When researching places to eat in Hong Kong, Tim Ho Wan continued to pop up on our radar. It’s a dim sum joint, meaning you order small dishes to share. It’s got a reputation for amazing food and is known for being the cheapest Michelin starred restaurant in the world.
Af first, we worried that eating at even the cheapest Michelin restaurant would certainly be out of our tight budget. We did some research and other budget travelers recommended the place so we decided to give it a try for ourselves on our last night in Hong Kong.
We went to the location in North Point, a quick 15 minute walk from our hostel. We heard that the lines can be long and the restaurant packed, so we were surprised to walk in and be seated immediately when we arrived for dinner around 7pm.
We were given a paper menu in English that we marked with our selections. We opted to try 6 of their dim sum dishes to share, ranging from fried pork bbq buns to steamed seafood dumplings.
We tried to be slightly adventurous without ordering anything too unappealing. John loved the “steamed dumplings in chiu chow style” which tasted like a pork dumpling. I particularly loved the steamed shrimp dumplings. We had tried other shrimp dishes in Hong Kong that tasted really fishy, but this one was much milder and filled with nothing but big, juicy shrimp. All of the food was amazing and really affordable – our total came to 145 HK dollars, or just around $20 USD. We couldn’t believe it.
We definitely recommend Tim Ho Wan to anyone traveling to Hong Kong. This was a great way to end our trip to this fabulous city.
